A Unified Clumped Isotope Thermometer Calibration (0.5–1,100°C) Using Carbonate‐Based Standardization

نویسندگان

چکیده

The potential for carbonate clumped isotope thermometry to independently constrain both the formation temperature of minerals and fluid oxygen composition allows insight into long-standing questions in Earth sciences, but remaining discrepancies between calibration schemes hamper interpretation measurements. To address calibrations, we designed analyzed a sample suite (41 total samples) with broad applicability across geosciences, an exceptionally wide range temperatures, precipitation methods, mineralogies. We see no statistically significant offset types, although comparison calcite dolomite remains inconclusive. When data are reduced identically, regression defined by this study is nearly identical that four previous studies used carbonate-based standardization; combine these present composite carbonate-standardized equation. Agreement types demonstrates unified, broadly applicable thermometer calibration.

Statistical clumped isotope signatures

High precision measurements of molecules containing more than one heavy isotope may provide novel constraints on element cycles in nature. These so-called clumped isotope signatures are reported relative to the random (stochastic) distribution of heavy isotopes over all available isotopocules of a molecule, which is the conventional reference. When multiple indistinguishable atoms of the same e...

Automated System for Thermometer Calibration

Calibration of thermometers is timeconsuming process that requires short-term temperature stability during multiple measurements at given temperature points. In most laboratories, thermometer calibration process is not automated, requiring the presence of the laboratory assistant during the calibration and for the subsequent calculation of the measurement uncertainty. In this paper, an automate...

Clumped isotope measurements of small carbonate samples using a high-efficiency dual-reservoir technique.

RATIONALE The measurement of multiply substituted isotopologues of CO2 derived from carbonate has allowed the reconstruction of paleotemperatures from a single phase (CaCO3 ), circumventing uncertainty inherent in other isotopic paleothermometers. Traditional analytical techniques require relatively large amounts of carbonate (3-8 mg per replicate), which limits the applicability of the clumped...

The Nist Industrial Thermometer Calibration Laboratory

The NIST Industrial Thermometer Calibration (ITC) Laboratory provides calibrations of industrial thermometers over the range from –196 °C to 550 °C. The different types of thermometers include liquid-in-glass (LiG), thermistors, thermocouples (<200 °C), and industrial platinum resistance thermometers (IPRTs). Calibrations are performed by both comparison with a standard platinum resistance ther...
